Supreme quality of craftsmanship established his reputation and the business grew and prospered. Sir Christopher Wren put his trust in James Gibbons ironmongery, as leading architects have done to the present day.
By the late 19th Century 'the oldest established lockmaker in Britain' had diversified into the manufacture of a much wider range of architectural metalwork. Examples of James Gibbons' craftsmanship can be seen in many notable and historic applications, including Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, and in the famous musical clock outside Fortnum & Mason in London.
The company responded to the changing architectural trends and demands of the 20th century with the formation of James Gibbons Format Limited. Combining the quality of the past with modern vision, the company developed the Format range of architectural ironmongery.
Today, James Gibbons Format architectural ironmongery defines a standard that others seek to follow. We are specified for the world's most prestigious buildings. From the 1980's, these have included the National Westminster Tower, The Barbican Centre and The Old Bailey. More recently we have completed: The Channel Tunnel, BT Offices Shaftsbury Avenue, The Ink Factory at the Bank of England and No1 Curzon Street.
Internationally, our products have enhanced buildings from the Kuwait Stock Exchange and Singapore Changi International Airport in the early 1980's, to projects including - among many others - the Headquarters building for Bank Dhofar Alfransi, Oman and the Haven of Hope Hospital, Hong Kong.
