Inwood Development Ltd was created in 1999 by Nigel Braden and Edward Stenhouse
Advances in machinery and glue technology allow new possibilities for utilisation of our timber resource.
Historically, the use of timber in construction, engineering and manufacturing has been limited by:
- The size of trees available
- Quality of the timber - the mechanical properties including movement potential and durability and freedom from defects.
- Conversion capability cost - yield
Clear lengths of large-sized quality timber has always been in demand and commanded premium prices. Limited quantities and cost have restricted availability and use. Sawing of low-quality logs could only produce low-value, small dimension timber with low yield, and increased cost.
New developments in wood technology have focused on creating higher value out of smaller-sized low-value timber. Small dimension short-length logs, sawn to remove knots, changes in grain direction and other defects can now be finger-jointed and glued to produce long-lengths of clear timber.
This has shown how pioneering developments in automated finger-jointing technology, together with high-strength durable glues have revolutionized the ability to use low-value timber in exciting new ways.
PRODUCTS Inwood produce a range of laminated timber products at the Whitesmith works, including:
- Rain-screen cladding
- Glue-laminated structural timber
- Joinery and furniture components
SERVICES Contract Manufacturing Services Inwood Developments provide crosscutting, finger jointing and laminating services, using customers timber if required, for specific projects such as worktops and stair treads.
Timber Research Services Inwood Developments have carried out pioneering research and development in strength testing and accelerated weathering trials for the glue joints at Building Research Establishment (BRE), Watford.
Inwood Director Nigel Braden was responsible for ensuring that sweet chestnut was given a grading standard by Building Research Establishment and which is now incorporated into a British Standard 5268:Part 2.
Inwood staff are qualified timber graders, and Members of the Institute of Wood Science.
