Lighting Design

Lighting is one of the most versatile mediums available to architects and designers, lighting design should be creative yet functional, centred on the lit appearance intended for the space. The concept should be focused on enhancing the architectural composition, expressing texture, revealing form, accurately rendering colour whilst creating a stimulating environment, with the aid of colour, lighting techniques and control systems.

Concept

The first stage of any design process is to establish the design concept. This may relate to the use and type of space, the clients desires and objectives as well as the designer's vision for the final installation. Vision is key to the design concept as only light enables the visual process to occur.

Development

Although the design concept should be created with products and existing technology in mind, it is only when developing the design concept that product selection should really take place, selecting appropriate equipment to achieve the design intentions as outlined in the design concept.

Analysis

Designer's and architects often have a vision of how they intend a space to appear once illuminated, however, design guidance and standards exist to ensure the lighting fulfils a certain criteria dependant on the type and use of the space. This can often be seen as the main aim of the design, ensuring the original vision of the designer is engineered accordingly, guaranteeing correct and proper equipment is selected.

Visualisation

The realisation of the lighting design concept is a crucial process in the design development, for it is the intended visual impression of the space, once illuminated, that forms the main goal of lighting design. Quantifying the amount of light is important when addressing guidance, codes of practise or standards, but to design by numbers is the equivalent of painting by numbers.
