Construction Begins On BMX Track For Olympic Games

The start of work on the BMX Track marks the next stage in delivering world-class cycling facilities for the Games and beyond.

After the Games the BMX Track will be situated along with the Velodrome, Mountain Bike Trails and a road-racing circuit for people of all ages and abilities – a new cycling 'hub' for east London.

The BMX Track will have 6,000 temporary seats for the Games, this seating will be removed and the Track reconfigured to make it suitable for a range of riders.

The 400-metre Track will include a series of jumps, bumps and tightly banked corners and the venue covers a total site area slightly larger than a football pitch.

The first stage of construction work involves 14,000 cubic metres of soil placed on site to create a series of levels up to four metres high. The final track surface will be laid on top of this platform and formed by a BMX track designer.

Olympic Delivery Authority Chairman John Armitt said: "With the construction of the Velodrome now completed, the start of work on the BMX Track is the next piece in the jigsaw of delivering a world-class cycling legacy from the Games.

"The BMX Track will be a first-class venue for the world's best riders in 2012 and after the Games, the reconfigured course will be a great facility for people of all ages and abilities to try out this exciting and growing sport."

The construction of the BMX Track is due for completion in summer 2011 in time for the track to be used for a Test Event in August.
