Light Switch Saves Energy |
|
All the traffic lights in Kent are being replaced with cost-effective low-energy units.
Kent Highway Services is nearing completion of its countywide replacement programme, costing £1.7million.
The benefits for council taxpayers are:- reduced energy costs to the council estimated at up to £150,000 a year, as less electricity is used
- savings are expected as there's no need to replace lamps - the light-emitting diode units have a longer life expectancy of 10 years
- environmental savings of carbon dioxide expected to total one tonne a year, as well as significant reductions in recycling of bulbs and other elements
Kent County Council Cabinet Member for Highways Nick Chard said: "The switch from existing halogen lamps will result in substantial financial and environmental savings. This is a good example which shows that 'going green' makes sound business sense."
